Genuine beginnings begin within us, even when they are brought to our attention by external opportunities

I promise to get to some practical stuff soon, but since the blog is brand new, just for fun I thought I’d post about something I dug up the other day which took me all the way back to my own beginnings as a programmer, while at the same time thoroughly dating myself!

In an old box of junk I found these:

DEC Edusystem BASIC Program Card 1DEC Edusystem BASIC Program Card 2
Recognize them?

They’re BASIC programming cards for a DEC PDP-8, circa 1973.

Yes, I still have the first program I ever wrote!

DEC Edusystem BASIC Program Card 4DEC Edusystem BASIC Program Card 3

Here’s the program listing:

      NEW BOB1
      10 PRINT “2+2=”;2+2
      20 END
      RUN

Talk about baby steps!

The school I attended actually owned the computer. I don’t remember much else about it other than being amazed watching the card reader rip through a stack of cards.

Simple minded, yes, but this was my introduction to the power of the electronic digital computer!

If you’re interested, you can see the programming manual for this system. The foreword says a lot about how naive, yet excited we were back then.
